Multitrack PCM Session Storage Calculator

How much uncompressed audio data will a multitrack recording create before backups?

Measured values and planning assumptions
Supported: 0 to 100000.
Supported: 8000 to 384000; whole numbers.
Supported: 8 to 64; whole numbers.
Supported: 1 to 512; whole numbers.
Supported: 1 to 100; whole numbers.

Method, formula and assumptions

Bytes per second = sample rate x stored bytes per sample x recorded mono channels. Multiply by duration for payload; multiply by retained copies for backup planning. GB is 10^9 bytes; GiB is 2^30 bytes.

Input definitions and supported units

  • Recorded duration (minutes): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 100000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
  • Sample rate (Hz): Whole-number count, from 8000 to 384000; must be positive.
  • Stored bits per sample: Whole-number count, from 8 to 64; must be positive.
  • Total recorded mono channels: Whole-number count, from 1 to 512; must be positive.
  • Total retained copies: Whole-number count, from 1 to 100; must be positive.

Worked example with answer

One hour of 48 kHz, 24-bit PCM across eight mono channels is 1.152 MB/s and 4.1472 GB (3.8624 GiB). Two total copies need 8.2944 GB before headers or session files.

How to use the results

Count stereo tracks as two channels and specify storage bit depth, not converter marketing resolution. The total-copy field includes the original, not just additional backups.

Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.

Limitations and references

Excludes container headers, waveform caches, edits, unused takes and plug-in assets. Floating-point storage commonly uses more bits than the original ADC resolution.

The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
