Helical Wrap Length Calculator
Calculate path length for a constant-pitch helix wrapped around a cylindrical centerline. This models the path itself, not added material for overlap, stretch, or end finishing.
Method, example, and limits
Formula: One turn travels circumference πD and axial distance p, so total path L = N√((πD)² + p²). Axial advance = Np.
Inputs and units: D is the diameter of the path's centerline, p is axial advance per turn, and N is turn count. Use one consistent length unit.
Worked example: For D = 50 mm, p = 10 mm/turn, and N = 10, path length is about 1,573.976 mm and axial advance is 100 mm.
Assumptions: The helix has constant diameter and pitch; turns may be fractional. Pitch is nonnegative and the centerline radius does not vary.
Limits: A wrap around a physical object may require extra length for tape width, overlap, material thickness, anchors, deformation, or cut waste. Centerline path length alone is not a procurement allowance.
