Database Connection Concurrency Planner
Does a per-instance pool budget cover mean active database work without exceeding the server connection budget?
Method, formula and assumptions
Mean active connections = transaction rate x mean connection-holding seconds (Little's law for stable throughput). Total configured pools = instances x per-instance maximum. Compare to server limit minus reserved connections.
Input definitions and supported units
- Database transactions per second: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Mean connection-holding time (ms): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 100000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Application instances: Whole-number count, from 1 to 10000; must be positive.
- Maximum pool per instance: Whole-number count, from 1 to 10000; must be positive.
- Server connection limit: Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000000; must be positive.
- Connections reserved for other clients: Whole-number count, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
Worked example with answer
500 transactions/s held for 40 ms imply 20 mean active connections. Four pools of 10 permit 40, leaving 20 above mean load and 50 within a 100-connection server with 10 reserved.
How to use the results
Mean concurrency is not a safe maximum or percentile. Negative server headroom warns that configured clients can overcommit the connection limit.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
Requires stable measured throughput and holding time, not full HTTP latency. Transactions per connection, multiplexing, bursts and database bottlenecks are not simulated.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
