Packet Header Payload Efficiency Calculator
How much of a measured packet-size budget remains application payload after the headers you enter?
Method, formula and assumptions
Payload bytes = total modeled bytes - included headers. Efficiency is payload / modeled total. Multiply wire rate by efficiency for an ideal payload rate; total header bytes multiply packet count.
Input definitions and supported units
- Total modeled packet bytes: Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000000; must be positive.
- Combined included header bytes: Whole-number count, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Wire rate (Mb/s): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Packet count: Whole-number count, from 0 to 1000000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
Worked example with answer
1,500 modeled bytes with 40 header bytes leaves 1,460 bytes: 97.3333% efficiency and 973.3333 Mb/s at a 1,000 Mb/s rate. 1,000 packets carry 40,000 header bytes.
How to use the results
Choose a consistent boundary: if total bytes exclude link framing, the result excludes it too. The rate is an upper-bound accounting estimate.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
No default protocol overhead is authoritative here. Acknowledgments, encryption, preambles, gaps, retransmission and small final packets must be budgeted separately.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
