Side Hustle Profit Calculator – Calculate Your Real Profit

See what is actually left after materials, platform fees, and expenses, plus your effective hourly rate.

How this calculator helps

Side hustle revenue looks impressive on its own, but materials, marketplace fees, and other expenses can quietly eat into the profit. This calculator strips those costs out and also converts the result into an effective hourly rate, which often tells a very different story than revenue alone.

Formula: Net profit = revenue − materials cost − (revenue × platform fee %) − other expenses. Effective hourly rate = net profit ÷ hours worked.

Assumptions: This is a pre-tax estimate. Set aside a separate percentage of profit for self-employment and income tax, since that is not included here.

Worked example: $1,200 in monthly revenue with $300 in materials, a 5% platform fee ($60), and $50 in other expenses leaves $790 in net profit. At 20 hours of work that month, the effective rate is about $39.50 per hour.

Add a tax-reserve percentage to see a rough monthly set-aside and the profit remaining after that reserve. This is a cash-flow planning estimate only: it does not determine your tax liability or replace estimated-tax guidance.

  • Monthly revenue: Total sales before any costs are subtracted.
  • Materials cost: Supplies, inventory, or cost of goods sold for the month.
  • Platform fee: Marketplace commission, payment processing, or listing fees.
  • Hours worked: Time spent producing, fulfilling, and managing the side hustle that month.

What the result means

Net profit shows what remains after the entered operating costs, before income and self-employment taxes. The optional reserve applies only when profit is positive; when the estimate is a loss, it sets aside nothing and leaves the loss visible. The reserve is a budgeting assumption, not an estimate of what you legally owe.

The effective hourly rate can reveal that a side hustle earning solid revenue is paying less per hour than expected once time is factored in. Include production, fulfillment, customer service, and bookkeeping hours for a more complete comparison.

Profit margin helps you compare different products, services, or platforms within the same side hustle. If margin is thin, look first at platform fees and materials cost, since those are usually easier to renegotiate or reduce than the price you charge customers.
