Crochet Yarn Swatch Estimate Calculator
Scale your measured swatch yarn use to a project area and add an explicit user-selected reserve.
How to use this estimate
This area-scaling estimate uses yarn actually consumed by your swatch, so stitch pattern and yarn choice are represented only if the swatch matches the project. It assumes similar stitch density and a flat area; shaping, seams, texture changes, and tension variation can change use. The reserve is your planning choice, not a universal allowance.
Method
Estimated base yarn = swatch mass × (project width × project height) / (swatch width × swatch height). Apply the selected reserve, then round skeins upward to whole packages.
Worked example
An 8 g swatch covering 10 × 10 cm scaled to 100 × 120 cm estimates 960 g. A selected 15% reserve gives 1,104 g, or 12 whole 100 g skeins.
Assumptions and supported inputs
Use measured dimensions and the listed field ranges. Values outside those bounds, missing entries, non-finite numbers, and fractional counts where a whole number is required are rejected. Displayed results are rounded to two decimal places; internal calculations retain full precision. This is a planning estimate, not a substitute for an on-site layout, product instructions, or a qualified trade decision where applicable.
