Paver Patio Cost Calculator – Estimate Your Patio Budget

Combine materials, base prep, and labor into a total cost estimate for a new paver patio.

How this calculator helps

Paver patios have several cost layers: the pavers themselves, the compacted base material underneath, and labor if you hire a contractor. This calculator estimates the paver order area and base volume as well as the project cost, so you can compare your materials list with supplier or contractor quotes.

Formula: Order area = patio area × (1 + waste allowance). Material cost = order area × (paver price + base price). Base volume = order area × base depth ÷ 324 cubic feet per cubic yard. Labor cost = patio area × labor rate.

Assumptions: The waste allowance is applied to materials, not labor. Base volume is a simple geometric estimate; compaction, excavation, soil conditions, and delivery quantities can change the amount actually needed.

Worked example: A 16 ft by 12 ft patio (192 sq ft) with a 10% waste allowance needs about 211 sq ft of materials. At $4.50 pavers, $1.75 base material, 6-inch base depth, and $7 per sq ft labor, the estimate is $2,664 and about 3.9 cubic yards of base.

  • Patio length and width: The finished patio dimensions in feet.
  • Paver price: Cost per square foot for the pavers themselves.
  • Base material price: Cost per square foot for gravel, sand, and base prep.
  • Base depth and waste: Adjust these to match your design, cutting pattern, and local installation plan.
  • Installation: Choose DIY or professional labor to add contractor costs.

What the result means

The total project cost gives you a realistic ballpark before you request contractor quotes, while the separate order-area and base-volume estimates help turn the budget into a preliminary materials list. Labor uses the finished patio area, while the entered waste allowance applies only to materials. Switching the installation type to DIY removes the contractor labor line but does not include tool rental or delivery.

Paver prices vary widely by material, from basic concrete pavers to premium natural stone, so update the paver price field to match the product you are actually considering. Contractor labor rates also vary by region and patio complexity, so treat the professional labor default as a starting point and adjust it after getting local quotes.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does this include patio furniture or landscaping? No, this estimate only covers paver material, base prep, and installation labor.
  • How much waste should I allow? The default is 10%; simple layouts may need less, while curves, borders, and diagonal patterns may need more. Confirm with the paver supplier.
  • Does the base volume include compaction? It is a geometric estimate based on finished area, entered depth, and waste allowance. Ask your installer or supplier whether the delivered loose volume needs a compaction adjustment.
  • Is DIY installation actually free? No, DIY still requires paver and base material purchases and possibly tool rental, but it removes contractor labor charges.
  • How much does professional installation typically cost per square foot? Many contractors charge roughly $6 to $12 per square foot for labor, depending on region and design complexity.
