Water and Sewer Bill Calculator – Estimate Monthly Cost

Estimate how much your household water and sewer bill is likely to cost — including tiered utility rates, an optional fixture-by-fixture usage breakdown, and a usage sensitivity table.

How this calculator helps

Many water utilities don't charge a single flat rate — they bill in tiers, where usage above a threshold costs more per gallon to discourage waste. A flat-rate estimate can miss that entirely. This calculator supports both flat and tiered pricing, and if you don't already know your monthly gallon usage, a fixture breakdown tool below can build that number for you from showers, laundry, toilets, and other household water use.

Flat-rate formula: Water cost = usage × water rate. Tiered formula: usage in each tier is billed at that tier's rate, then the tier costs are summed, so only the gallons above a threshold cost the higher rate — not your entire usage.

Assumptions: Tier thresholds and sewer charges vary widely by provider; check your utility's rate schedule for exact figures. This tool is a planning estimate, not a bill.

Worked example: With the default tiers ($0.008/gal for the first 5,000 gallons, $0.012/gal for the next 5,000, $0.018/gal above that) and 8,000 gallons used, usage charges are 5,000 × $0.008 + 3,000 × $0.012 = $76, plus the $35 sewer charge and $12 fixed fee, for a total of about $123.

  • Monthly usage: Total water consumed over the billing period, or built from the fixture breakdown below.
  • Tiered billing: Toggle on if your utility charges more per gallon once usage crosses a threshold.
  • Sewer charge: Additional service or utility fee.
  • Fixed charges: Base service costs not tied directly to usage.

What the result means

Water costs are often grouped with utility bills, but the actual total depends on both consumption and how your provider structures its rates. Tiered pricing means the last few thousand gallons of a heavy-usage month can cost noticeably more per gallon than the first few thousand — this calculator reflects that instead of averaging everything at one rate.

The fixture breakdown is useful if you've never checked a water meter and don't know your monthly usage: add a row per fixture or activity, adjust the gallons-per-use if your appliance is more or less efficient than the default, and set how many times per month you use it. The running total updates as you type, and one click fills it into the main usage field.

Frequently asked questions

  • Why does my water bill vary by season? Outdoor watering, longer showers, and seasonal appliance use can raise consumption well above a typical baseline month — and if your utility is tiered, that extra usage often lands in a higher-priced tier.
  • What is tiered billing? Many municipal utilities charge a low rate for a baseline amount of water, then a higher rate for usage above that threshold, to encourage conservation. Check your bill or provider's rate schedule for your exact thresholds.
  • Are sewer charges included? Many providers bill sewer fees based on water usage. Add that rate to the fixed fees field for a more complete estimate.
  • How can I lower my estimated bill? Reducing peak usage activities like irrigation or long showers has the biggest impact — and on a tiered plan, cutting usage that falls in the top tier saves the most per gallon.
