Carton Void Fill Material Calculator
What loose-fill volume and material mass follow from empty internal space and your chosen fill fraction?
Method, formula and assumptions
Void = carton volume - product displacement. Fill volume = void x selected fill fraction. Multiply by cartons and measured loose bulk density; convert grams to kg.
Input definitions and supported units
- Carton inside volume (L): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 100000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Packed product displacement (L): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 100000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Empty-space fraction to fill (%): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 100; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Measured loose-fill bulk density (g/L): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 10000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Carton count: Whole-number count, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
Worked example with answer
A 20 L carton with 12 L product has 8 L void. Filling 75% uses 6 L/carton; 100 cartons need 600 L and 3 kg at 5 g/L.
How to use the results
Displacement is the volume unavailable to fill, not merely a product's bounding-box volume when loose material can enter gaps.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
This estimates procurement, not protective performance. Settlement, compression and protective clearances require packing trials and supplier guidance.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
