Anamorphic Desqueeze Canvas Calculator
What desqueezed canvas and target-aspect crop follow from a measured horizontal squeeze factor?
Method, formula and assumptions
Desqueezed width = round(recorded width x horizontal factor). Keep image height. Fit a centered whole-pixel crop to the target display ratio and compare its area with the expanded canvas.
Input definitions and supported units
- Recorded width (pixels): Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000000; must be positive.
- Recorded height (pixels): Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000000; must be positive.
- Horizontal desqueeze factor: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 1 to 4; must be positive.
- Target display width/height ratio: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0.1 to 10; must be positive.
Worked example with answer
1,920 x 1,080 at 2x desqueeze becomes 3,840 x 1,080, ratio 3.5556. A 2.4 target crops to 2,592 x 1,080, retaining 67.5% of that canvas.
How to use the results
Desqueezing interpolates samples; it does not create new horizontal optical detail. The target crop is expressed after desqueeze, not in recorded sensor pixels.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
Squeeze can vary with focus and lens design. No camera pixel-aspect metadata, stabilization crop or lens correction is applied.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
