Tiled Poster Overlap Planner

How many printable tiles cover a larger poster while preserving join overlap?

Measured values and planning assumptions

Method, formula and assumptions

The first tile covers its full printable span; subsequent tiles add tile span minus overlap. Axis count = max(1, ceil((poster span - overlap)/(tile span - overlap))).

Input definitions and supported units

  • Poster width (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 1 to 100000; must be positive.
  • Poster height (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 1 to 100000; must be positive.
  • Printable tile width (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 1 to 10000; must be positive.
  • Printable tile height (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 1 to 10000; must be positive.
  • Overlap at each internal join (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 1000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.

Worked example with answer

A 600 x 900 mm poster on 200 x 280 mm printable tiles with 10 mm joins needs four columns and four rows, or 16 sheets. Coverage exceeds the poster by 170 mm wide and 190 mm high.

How to use the results

The excess can be trimmed from edge tiles. This partitions one large image, unlike imposing many separate pieces onto a sheet.

Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.

Limitations and references

Printer margins must already be excluded from printable tile dimensions. Alignment marks, paper stretch and scaling settings are not modeled.

The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
