Rack Unit Allocation Planner
Will a repeated device layout fit after reserved rack space and per-device gaps?
Method, formula and assumptions
Available rack units = rack U - fixed reserve. Each repeated allocation includes device U plus its own gap U, including the last device. Floor(available / allocation) gives one-rack capacity.
Input definitions and supported units
- Rack capacity (U): Whole-number count, from 1 to 100; must be positive.
- Reserved fixed space (U): Whole-number count, from 0 to 100; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Each device height (U): Whole-number count, from 1 to 100; must be positive.
- Reserved gap per device (U): Whole-number count, from 0 to 100; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Required devices: Whole-number count, from 0 to 10000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
Worked example with answer
A 42U rack with 6U reserved and 2U devices plus 1U gap per device fits 12 devices. Ten requested devices occupy 36U including reserve and leave 6U margin.
How to use the results
The last device retains its gap by design. Negative requested margin signals a space overflow; it does not silently shrink the reserve.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
U arithmetic cannot check depth, rail compatibility, weight, power, cooling or seismic/structural requirements. Check hardware specifications before installation.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
