Motion-Control Slider Step Budget Calculator
What microstep count and controller pulse rate produce a chosen rail move over a fixed duration?
Method, formula and assumptions
Pulse density = full steps/revolution x microsteps/full step / travel per revolution. Round requested distance x density to whole pulses; divide by move duration for mean pulse rate.
Input definitions and supported units
- Requested rail travel (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 100000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Rail travel per motor revolution (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0.001 to 10000; must be positive.
- Motor full steps per revolution: Whole-number count, from 1 to 10000; must be positive.
- Microsteps per full step: Whole-number count, from 1 to 1024; must be positive.
- Move duration (seconds): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0.001 to 1000000; must be positive.
Worked example with answer
500 mm travel with 8 mm/revolution, 200 full steps and 16 microsteps yields 400 pulses/mm and 200,000 pulses. A 20-second move averages 10,000 pulses/s with zero quantized travel error.
How to use the results
Mean pulse rate is an electronics/timing budget, not a complete acceleration profile. Quantization error is relative to commanded geometry only.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
Does not establish motor torque, load capacity, positioning accuracy or equipment safety. Acceleration, backlash, missed steps and actual controller limits need verification.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
