Book Signature Pagination Calculator
How many complete signatures and blank pages are required by a fixed signature size?
Method, formula and assumptions
Complete signatures = ceil(content pages/signature pages). Rounded pagination is signatures x pages per signature; subtract content pages for blanks. Multiply signatures by book copies for total signature units.
Input definitions and supported units
- Content pages: Whole-number count, from 0 to 100000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Printed pages per signature: Whole-number count, from 4 to 128; must be positive.
- Books to produce: Whole-number count, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
Worked example with answer
130 content pages with 16-page signatures require nine signatures and 144 interior pages. Each book has 14 blanks; 500 copies require 4,500 signature units.
How to use the results
Plan front matter and end matter in the content count. A shorter final signature can change the result, but is outside this fixed-signature model.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
Does not generate an imposition map or press sheet count. Folding schemes, inserted plates and mixed stocks require the bindery's specifications.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
