Book Spine Caliper Calculator
How thick is a book block when page count, measured leaf caliper and added binding allowance are known?
Method, formula and assumptions
Two printed pages occupy one leaf. Block thickness = pages/2 x measured leaf caliper. Add the printer-specified binding allowance to estimate spine width.
Input definitions and supported units
- Interior printed pages: Whole-number count, from 2 to 100000; must be positive.
- Measured thickness per leaf (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0.001 to 10; must be positive.
- Printer-specified binding allowance (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 100; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
Worked example with answer
200 printed pages form 100 leaves. At 0.1 mm per leaf the block is 10 mm; adding a 1 mm binding allowance gives an 11 mm estimated spine.
How to use the results
Use measured caliper rather than guessing thickness from GSM. The allowance represents your printer's process and can be zero if already included in measured block thickness.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
Compression, glue, fold swelling and paper bulk affect production width. Obtain the printer's final spine specification before submitting a cover.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
