Cut-and-Stack Numbering Position Calculator

Which number belongs at one sheet and position so cut stacks can be assembled in order?

Measured values and planning assumptions
Supported: 1 to 1000000000; whole numbers.

Method, formula and assumptions

Sheets per stack = ceil(total pieces/positions per sheet). With position-major numbering, zero-based serial offset = (position - 1) x sheets + sheet - 1. Offsets beyond total are blank positions.

Input definitions and supported units

  • Total numbered pieces: Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000000000; must be positive.
  • Positions per sheet: Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000; must be positive.
  • Sheet index (starting at 1): Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000000000; must be positive.
  • Position index (starting at 1): Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000; must be positive.
  • First serial number: Whole-number count, from 0 to 1000000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.

Worked example with answer

1,000 pieces four-up require 250 sheets. Sheet 10, position 3 contains serial 510 when numbering starts at 1. There are zero blanks and the final used serial is 1,000.

How to use the results

The scheme assumes each cut position becomes one stack, with sheets kept in order, then those position stacks are concatenated.

Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.

Limitations and references

Does not account for press delivery reversal, sheet flipping, duplex layouts or bindery stack reversal. Verify a small mock run before producing numbered stock.

The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
