Ink Film Coverage Consumption Calculator
How much deposited ink follows from printed area, measured film thickness and coverage?
Method, formula and assumptions
One m2 coated one micrometer thick contains 0.001 L. Multiply sheet area, coverage fraction, measured thickness and impressions. Density in g/mL has the same numeric value as kg/L.
Input definitions and supported units
- Printable area per sheet (m2): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 100; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Area coverage (%): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 100; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Measured wet film thickness (micrometers): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0.001 to 1000; must be positive.
- Printed impressions: Whole-number count, from 0 to 1000000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Measured ink density (g/mL): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0.01 to 10; must be positive.
- Additional handling loss relative to deposition (%): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 500; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
Worked example with answer
0.1 m2 per impression at 50% coverage and 2 micrometers across 10,000 impressions deposits 1 L. At 1.1 g/mL that is 1.1 kg; a 10% added handling allowance budgets 1.21 kg.
How to use the results
Calculate one ink separation at a time and use wet-film measurements consistent with the supplied density. Handling allowance is added to deposition, not a recovery efficiency.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
This geometric film model cannot infer coverage from artwork or predict press waste. Substrate absorption, drying, cleaning and transfer efficiency require measured process data.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
