Printed Mailing Piece Weight Budget Calculator

How much mass remains under an entered mailing-weight threshold after the printed inserts and envelope?

Measured values and planning assumptions
Supported: 1 to 10000.
Supported: 1 to 10000.
Supported: 1 to 3000.
Supported: 0 to 10000; whole numbers.
Supported: 0 to 10000.
Supported: 0 to 1000000.

Method, formula and assumptions

Insert mass = unfolded area in m2 x GSM x sheet count. Add measured envelope mass and subtract total mass from the entered threshold.

Input definitions and supported units

  • Unfolded insert width (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 1 to 10000; must be positive.
  • Unfolded insert height (mm): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 1 to 10000; must be positive.
  • Insert basis mass (g/m2): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 1 to 3000; must be positive.
  • Insert sheets per envelope: Whole-number count, from 0 to 10000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
  • Measured envelope mass (g): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 10000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
  • Entered mailing threshold (g): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.

Worked example with answer

210 x 297 mm at 80 g/m2 gives 4.9896 g per sheet. Three inserts total 14.9688 g; a 5 g envelope makes 19.9688 g, leaving 5.0312 g below an entered 25 g threshold.

How to use the results

Folding changes dimensions but not paper area or nominal mass. A negative threshold margin means the piece exceeds your entered allowance.

Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.

Limitations and references

No postal class, tariff or official threshold is supplied. Ink, labels, glue, thickness and dimensional eligibility must be checked with the current carrier rules.

The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
