Reusable Dunnage Pool Rotation Calculator
How many reusable packaging units are tied up across the circulation cycle and chosen reserve?
Method, formula and assumptions
Cycle duration adds outbound, customer dwell, return and servicing time. In a steady flow, active circulation = daily dispatch x cycle days. Add the reserve percentage and round final pool up.
Input definitions and supported units
- Reusable units dispatched per day: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Outbound transit days: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 10000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Customer dwell days: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 10000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Return transit days: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 10000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Cleaning/inspection days: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 10000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Additional units as cycle-pool reserve (%): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 500; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
Worked example with answer
200 units/day across 2 outbound, 5 customer, 3 return and 1 service days has an 11-day cycle and 2,200 active units. A 20% reserve makes a 2,640-unit pool, adding 440.
How to use the results
This sizes circulating reusable assets, not inventory safety stock or a reorder point. The reserve is an arbitrary planning input, not a calculated service probability.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
Loss, seasonality, damage, batch returns and long dwell tails can increase needs. Constant average cycle and dispatch rates do not guarantee availability.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
