Split Shipment Fixed-Cost Trade-Off Calculator
What incremental dispatch cost is incurred if a backordered remainder ships separately?
Method, formula and assumptions
Unit handling stays the same; splitting adds one extra fixed dispatch charge. Entered delay cost avoided = ready units x delay cost/unit/day x wait days. Net trade-off subtracts this avoided cost from incremental dispatch cost.
Input definitions and supported units
- Total order units: Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000000; must be positive.
- Units ready for first shipment: Whole-number count, from 1 to 1000000; must be positive.
- Fixed cost per dispatch: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Handling cost per unit: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Delay cost per ready unit per day: Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 1000000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
- Wait for remaining units (days): Measured or assumed numerical value, from 0 to 10000; zero is supported where the stated method permits it.
Worked example with answer
A 100-unit order with 60 ready, 12 fixed/dispatch and 0.5 handling/unit costs 62 consolidated or 74 split. Avoiding 3 days at 0.1 per ready unit saves 18, giving a -6 net trade-off.
How to use the results
Negative net trade-off favors splitting under the entered cost assumptions. Delay cost is your operational valuation, not an estimated customer penalty.
Results retain full precision internally and display up to four decimal places. Very small nonzero results use scientific notation rather than appearing as zero. Check the labels before comparing values across units.
Limitations and references
Does not predict postage brackets, customer acceptance, partial-delivery rules or revenue timing. Enter separate costs if the two shipments differ materially.
The method is a self-contained arithmetic, geometric or explicitly stated mathematical model. There are no imported tariffs, empirical presets or equipment specifications; measured values and allowances must come from your own process.
